デッドライン仕事術 吉越浩一郎 / Japanese Book Review - Deadline by Koichiro Yoshikoshi

Deadline by Koichiro Yoshikoshi (3rd edition)

This is a very interesting book about increasing work efficiency.

The author, Koichiro, first compares what's the differences between the working culture of Japanese companies and foreign companies

Most Japanese businessmen include work as part of their life and they don’t think they should spend time on other things rather than on work. To my surprise, Koichiro said that most Japanese businessmen work overtime excessively without questioning themselves why they are spending so much time on working. Starting work at 9:00 am and leaving work at 11pm appears to be very common.

On the other hand, the businessmen in the western hemisphere of the planet  separate work from the life.

They think work and private life are two separate items in their life. A minute spent on working overtime is a minute lost to have fun.

Koichiro suggests Japanese businessmen to:

1. Put dealines on all tasks
2. Stop working overtime -> force one’s self to increase work efficiency to finish all work by 6:30 pm.
3. Use only email to communicate more (Japanese businessmen usually call and email to confirm on 1 thing.)
4. Shorten decision making time by flatting organisation structure

I have been working in Japan for 3 year and half. I have experienced working in a traditional Japanese company and work very long  hours everyday for the first 2 years being here. (That was a very dark time for me….. Orz) That was not fun.

I am hoping this book can change Japanese business people’s mindset and increase their work efficiency and decrease overtime work.
