Good morning. It’s Jeff. 

I love how Steven Pinker started chapter one with an interesting quote. It goes like this. 

“The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.”

Our society has changed dramatically if you compare the civilization we have today with any times before 20th centuries. 

Now rape of women in wartime is treated as an atrocious war crime but it was common to turn women to sex slaves before 20th century. 

I have thought medieval knights are chivalrous. Knights do protect ladies but only do so to keep the ladies to be abducted by other knights. A lady traveled with a knight could be won in battle by another knight. Traveling with a knight is actually more dangerous than traveling alone for a lady. 

It’s actually not very comfortable and very shocking to read chapter 1. 

However, knowing the facts in the past helps us to appreciate the civilization we have today.

Steven Pinker氏が第１章で引用した名言がとても気に入っています。 

”過去は別の世界であります。過去のやり方と考え方は全く違いますから。”

２０世紀より前の世界と比べると、現在の文明は凄く変わっていることがわかります。 

２０世紀以前の戦争の時代は、女性をレイプすることは珍しくはありませんでした。今は、許されない戦争犯罪の一つになりました。 

この本を読む前は、中世の騎士は凛々しいと思いました。女性を守る存在だと思いました。でも実際は違います。 

騎士が女性を守る理由は単に他の人に取られたくないからです。 

女性が騎士と一緒にいる時は一人の時より危ないです。 

なぜかというと、同行してる騎士がもし旅の途中で他の騎士と戦って負けたら自分は勝った騎士の「物」になるからです。 

正直言いますと、第１章を読む時ちょっと気持ち悪いですね。

でも、過去を知ることによって現在の平和にもっと感謝することができますよね。
