The homicide rate has significantly dropped in Europe since the 15th century.

The homicide structure has changed as well. While homicide rate in both upper class and lower class decreased, the rate in upper class decreased far more than the rate in lower class.

This could be explained by the civilization.

Steven concludes the civilization process is triggered by 2 major factors:

1. Consolidate of political units
There were 5000 political units in Europe in the 15th century.
The number has decreased to 200 units in the 19th century.

With this change, a man’s way up to a better life is no longer beating other warriors but to win the political leader’s favor.

2. Economic revolution
Your partner become much more valuable alive than dead.

殺人発生率は１５世紀と比べると、大部減ってきました。

殺人事件自体も変わりました。社会全体の殺人事件率は減っている中で、下層社会より上流社会の殺人率がもっと減ってきました。

この現象は文明化で説明できます。

文明化に影響してる要素は二つあります：

１・政治団体の統合
１５世紀にヨーロッパの政治団体は５０００個ありました。
１９世紀は２００個しかありません。

政治団体の統合より、戦うだけでは出世できなくなったのです。政治家の信頼を得ることが重要になりました。

２・経済革命
パートナーを殺すより、生きてる方が価値があると気づいたのです。
